War of 1812 Bicentennial Legislation Passes US House - Now to Senate
HR 1389 Establishing Star-Spangled Banner and War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission Passes US House - On to US Senate
The United States House of Representatives passed House Resolution 1389 on September 24th on a voice vote that would Establish the Star-Spangled Banner and War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission. Similar legislation considered during the previous session of Congress but was not completed before they adjourned. The legislation is sponsored by Rep. John Sarbanes of Maryland. Kentucky Representative Geoff Davis is one of the cosponsors of the House measure. This bill has been passed in the House. The bill now goes on to be considered in the Senate. KY General Assembly Considered Legislation To Create Civil War 150th & War of 1812 Bicentennial Commissions
The Kentucky Senate passed Senate Bill 197 to Establish the Kentucky War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission. The bill also creates a Commission to oversee the state's observance of the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War.
The bill went to the House where it was passed out of the State Government Committee. However a floor amendment was filed to create the Kentucky Slavery Commission and the bill was never called for a vote.
It is hoped that the War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission will be brought forward again in future sessions of the Kentucky General Assembly.
SB 197 (BR 1672) - E. Tori AN ACT relating to the establishment of historical commissions. Create new sections of KRS Chapter 171 to establish and attach the Commonwealth of Kentucky War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission; attach the commission to the Kentucky Historical Society; assign membership and duties; sunset on December 31, 2015.
SB 197 - AMENDMENTS
SCS - Retain original provisions with technical corrections; establish a Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission to study and recommend ways to commemorate Kentucky's role in the Civil War; provide for membership and specify duties; provide that the commission shall expire in 2015.
