Kentucky Inspector General 2006 – Present

Colonel David R. Alexander is a native of Ohio.  He is a 1981 graduate of Bowling Green State University, where he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army as a Field Artillery (FA) Officer.  After completing FAOBC, he attended the US Army Airborne School, and then the US Army Aviation School, where he was qualified in the UH-1 and UH-60 helicopters.  Upon completion of flight school, 1LT Alexander was assigned to the 158th Aviation Battalion (Assault Helicopter), 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) where he served as a Section Leader and as a company Executive Officer.  His next assignment as a Captain, was with the 201st Aviation Company, 52nd Aviation Battalion (8th US Army), Camp Humphreys, Korea, where he served as an Aviation Platoon Leader and as the Assistant S3.  Following Korea, he was re-assigned to the 5th and 9th Aviation Battalions, 101st Aviation Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, where he served as an Assistant S3, as an S1, and as a Company Commander for over 28 months, serving in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.  After Desert Storm, he was assigned to the Directorate of Combat Developments (DCD) at the US Army Aviation Center and School, Fort Rucker, AL, as a Concepts Staff Officer and the Operations Officer for the Directorate.  While at Fort Rucker, he transitioned into the Army Acquisition Corps.  This was followed by his only acquisition assignment as the Senior Engineer for Operations and the hardware engineer for SPBS-R for the Fort Lee Engineering Office, Fort Lee, VA.  After attending the US Army Command and General Staff College, Major Alexander was re-branched back into Army Aviation and assigned as the S3 for the 1st Battalion, 223rd Aviation Regiment, Aviation Training Brigade at Fort Rucker, AL and later served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for the US Army Aviation Center and School.  From 1999-2002, LTC Alexander was assigned as a joint staff officer in the Plans and Policy Directorate (J5) for the US European Command (EUCOM) in Stuttgart, Germany.  From 2002-2004, he was as the Battalion Commander of the 1st Battalion, 337th Aviation Regiment (Training Support) at Fort Knox, KY where his unit provided training and mobilization support to Reserve Component (RC) aviation units.  From 2004-2006, he served as the Professor of Military Science (PMS) for the Army ROTC program at the University of Kentucky.  His current assignment since June 2006 is as the Inspector General (IG) for the Kentucky National Guard.

COL Alexander’s military education includes; the Field Artillery Basic Course (FAOBC), Aviation Officer’s Advanced Course (AOAC), Combined Arms Service Staff School (CAS3), Materiel Acquisition Management Course (MAM), System Automation Course (SAC), the Command and General Staff College (CGSC), and was a US Army War College Distance Education Program selectee.

His awards and decorations include; the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (3 OLC), the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (3 OLC), and the Army Achievement Medal (5 OLC).  He is a Senior Army Aviator, and is both Airborne and Air Assault qualified.  He holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration (Aviation) from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.  He is married to his wife Janet and has two daughters, Alyssa (20) and Lyndsey (16) and resides in Richmond, KY.
