Smythe "Jack" Williams
Smythe "Jack" Williams, a native of Frankfort, joined the Kentucky Army National Guard's 413th Ordnance Company in Aug 1961. He was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis from 1 October 1961 to 11 August 1962 with the 413th. Williams attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Kentucky Army National Guard in April 1964. His first assignment was that of Logistical Coordination Officer for the 103d Signal Company until February 1968.

Williams went on to serve as Platoon Leader and Later Company Commander of the 413th Ordnance Company from Jan 1968 to Jan 1974. Williams next served in the 103rd Service and Supply Battalion from Jan 74 until April 74 as Field Service Officer. In May 74 he became the Company Commander for the 306th Maintenance Company. From October 75-77 he served as the In Storage Maintenance Officer and later Field Service Officer for the 103d Service and Supply Battalion. From Oct 77-79 he served as Executive Officer for HHC 103d Service and Support.

From Oct 79-82 he served as Maintenance Officer, HHD. From Nov 82 to Oct 85 he served S2/S3, 103d Support Battalion. He then served Sep 86 to Jun 87 as Deputy Director of Personnel, Headquarters State Area Command. From July 87 to July 89 he served as Battalion Commander of the 103d Forward Support Battalion and from Aug 89 to March 90 he served as Director of Selective Service for Headquarters State Area Command. Williams next served as Director of Maintenance for Headquarters State Area Command from Apr 90 to Apr 95.
In May 1995 Williams became Assistant Adjutant General of the Kentucky Army National Guard where he served until his military retirement on 31 October 1997.

Williams's awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal; Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster and Two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters; National Defense Service Medal; Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Gold Hour Glass; Army Service Ribbon and the Berlin Crisis Ribbon.

Williams was also a career employee of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and served in a variety of positions during his career including: executive director of the Office of Personnel Management in the Cabinet for Human Resources as well as director of the Division of Aging Services for the Department of Social Service in the Cabinet for Human Resources.

Williams also served the local community in a variety of ways including three terms as a member of the Frankfort Independent School Board and also served as a commissioner for the City of Frankfort. Williams was also active in many community organizations such as Optimist Club, Red Cross and Senior Citizens Center, Military Order of the World Wars and the American Legion.
