Central City Armory
A Brief History of the Kentucky National Guard In Central City

The 307th Maintenance Company is the only National Guard unit that has ever been stationed in Central City. When the unit first started in 1974, it used the second floor of the City Building on Main Street as its home until the armory was completed in 1976. The entire unit from Central City has never participated in an overseas conflict, but several volunteers did serve in Desert Storm. Over the years, the unit has participated in a number of state active duty missions, including snowstorms (1978), a train derailment in which hazardous chemicals were spilled, and the March floods of 1997.

The primary duty of the 307th is the maintenance and repair of Army vehicles. Before the armory was completed, motor vehicles were stored at the Western Kentucky (now Wendell Ford) Regional Training Center. On drill weekends, the 307th usually goes to the WFRTC to repair vehicles. The unit has also traveled to Frankfort to work in the Combined Support Maintenance Shop.

About The Central City National Guard Armory

The current one-story brick armory was completed in January, 1976. The drill hall is mainly used for vehicle storage, because the armory does not have a separate maintenance area or organizational maintenance shop. Therefore, the drill hall is not rented out or used for other community activities.
