63rd AVIATION GROUP
Organized and Federally recognized 15 September 1986 in the Kentucky Army National Guard at Frankfort as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Aviation Brigade, 35th Infantry Division.
Reorganized and redesignated 1 September 1995 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 63rd Aviation Group, and relieved from assignment to the 35th Infantry Division.
HOME STATION: Frankfort, Kentucky.

Shoulder sleeve insignia (Patch)
Shoulder sleeve insignia description: On a shield 2 ½-inches in width and 3 ¼-inches in height overall triparted blue, white, and red with a yellow chief, a white long rifle barrel up outlined in blue diagonally from upper to lower right, all within an 1/8-inch blue border.
Red, white and blue are our national colors. The color Yellow and the red and blue allude to the combat arms: Armor (Cavalry), Artillery, and Infantry. The long rifle is inseparably associated with the early history of Kentucky prior to and after its admission to the Union as the 15th State.
The shoulder sleeve insignia was approved on 30 December 1983.
Distinctive Unit Insignia (Crest)
A Silver colored metal and enamel device blazoned as follows: Per chevron enarched Azure and Gris, on an arrowhead throughout counterchanged in chief a demi-Pegasus issuant Sable and in base a mulletty of the second. Attached to the sides and below the device a Red scroll inscribed “UNBRIDLED THUNDER” in Silver. Overall dimensions are 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in height. Symbolism: Blue is the color traditionally associated with the Aviation units. The shield represents defense. The arrowhead signifies readiness; pointing up, indicates the spirit of the aviation mission. The Pegasus symbolizes the Brigade’s mission of flight, alluding to the unit’s location, Kentucky, the horse capital of the world. The stars suggest constancy; the two rows of stars, six and three, allude to the number “63,” the Brigade’s designation Background: The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 30 August 2007.

Ultramarine blue is the color traditionally used by aviation units, while the light blue represents the sky and the unit's theater of operations. The Pegasus refers to the group's home and heritage as well as its mission and capabilities.
